5 Free Messaging Apps for Windows 10

It has never been so easy to communicate via the internet. It’s getting to the point where the youth of today don’t know the difference between an SMS or MMS text.

That’s because there are so many free messaging apps for us to use when we want and how we want. To celebrate that fact, in this blog we are going to look at five of the best options for Windows 10 users.
Yes, it’s been difficult to only choose five of our favourites. Here at FileHippo.com we have an extensive catalogue of Chat and Messaging Software for you to discover.
Nevertheless, here we will examine only five. Making the list is Facebook MessengerDiscord MessengerSlackViber and, of course, WhatsApp.
For us, these choices represent the cream of all the free messaging apps for Windows 10 out there. However, you may disagree. That’s the beautiful thing about tech software, everyone will look for something different in a program. So, be sure to check out our full range too!
Free messaging apps open up a world of opportunities for free, safe and instant communication. As you would expect many of the best options come from the big names like Skype and Yahoo! Facebook and WhatsApp are also in that category, and their messaging apps make it on this list.
That being said, there is also an Aladdin’s cave of often underestimated apps from publishers that the average person hasn’t heard of before. As always, we would urge you to check them out as well as the famous names. You may just unearth a real gem hiding in the download lists!
So, without further ado, let’s look at five free messaging apps for Windows 10 that you can enjoy today.

Facebook Messenger

This is perhaps the most common and obvious free messaging option out there. Almost every one of us will have, or have once had, a Facebook account. If you do, you’re encouraged to download the Messenger app.
It works great on a mobile, connecting with all your media files and contacts. But the great news for Windows 10 users is that it works just as well on a PC – and you don’t have to be signed into Facebook on a browser either.
Key Features
  • Send photos and videos.
  • Make calls anywhere in the world.
  • Record voice messages.
  • Group chats.
  • Thousands of stickers to choose from.
  • Read status updates.
That’s right, you can respond to chats right from your desktop. So, whether you’re using another app or browsing other websites, you can stay connected without having to click away!
The app also has a built-in notifier that will keep you alert to new comments, photo tags and much more as well.
Overall, you’re sure to get a great overall experience with this free messaging solution. You can bet a lot of people will be using similar means too, so pretty much all of your friends and family will be contactable around the clock.

WhatsApp

Here’s our second well-known free messaging option. WhatsApp has been around for some time now and has become a renowned messaging service.
Windows 10 users will be delighted to know that WhatsApp launched a desktop app for PC, as well as its mobile service.
Key Features:
  • Send photos and videos.
  • Change settings.
  • Star Messages.
  • Group Chats.
  • Record voice settings.
People love the desktop version as it doesn’t need to take up any valuable storage space on your web browser. Essentially it works as an extension of your phone. So, it will mirror the conversations and messages found on your device.
Don’t worry, using the desktop version of WhatsApp is easy. As soon as you have downloaded and installed the app, you simply need to scan the QR code on the screen with your phone using WhatsApp (Open WhatsApp, click Menu and select WhatsApp Web). Then, as soon as it is recognised, the desktop app will be linked with your account.
Using the desktop version of the app comes with advantages including proper native desktop notifications and better keyboard shortcuts. You simply need WhatsApp installed and working on your phone and Windows 10 on your desktop.

Discord Messenger

Now, the average man on the street – depending on where you are – may not have heard of Discord Messenger as much as our previous solutions.
However, that doesn’t mean that it’s not a fantastic choice, especially for avid gamers. This massively popular communication platform allows the user to create channels and separate rooms within them. This way you can communicate with friends via text or voice.
Key Features:
  • Chat with small and large groups.
  • Send text and voice messages.
  • Set up different servers to chat with different groups.
  • Invite friends to server with unique invite link.
  • Runs in the background as you play games if you install app.
Don’t worry about any unwanted intruders coming in on your conversations either. Access restrictions can be set on individual channels that restrict entry to invited users only. So there’s no fear of people accidentally being added to a private chat! It’s almost fool proof!
But don’t worry if you’re not a gamer. Discord Messenger channels are not centred exclusively around gaming. Communities for pretty much any hobby, passion, or pastime can be found online.
Overall, Discord Messenger provides text and voice communication to a huge array of communities. Although it seems to have found a home predominantly with gamers, don’t let this put you off! There is something for everyone.

Slack

Slack is incredibly popular with working teams of all sizes. This online social messaging platform means people can collaborate on projects more effectively.
Users can create a team in Slack, and then log in to hold group or private chats, share data and links with each member of that team and discuss the project together. All of the communications that are held on Slack are grouped into different Channels, and everything that is created is searchable.
Key Features:
  • Project-friendly structure.
  • Collaborate with teams.
  • Create chat channels with their own permissions.
  • Add bots and auto moderators.
  • Integrate with other tools.
  • Share files.
  • Task list management.
Slack organises team conversations into open channels. The great thing about using channels is they can be utilised by everyone; all users have a transparent view of all its aspects. If you have sensitive information to discuss, users can create private channels and invite only the team members you choose.
A really useful feature of Slack is the file sharing capability. You can drag and drop files, documents, PDFs, images, and videos to share with anyone and get immediate feedback and discussion via comments. You can also star it for later reference, and all data is completely searchable.
Overall, Slack is a superb service that allows teams to communicate in real time together. It offers support for private groups and 1:1 direct messaging. So, no matter what device or platform a team member may be using, they are always able to keep up.
With advanced features including encrypted messaging, and over 100 integrations, with an open API to build more, it’s no wonder Slack is highly respected communications solution.

Viber

Our last, but in no means least, capable solution is Viber. This popular free Voice-over IP messaging service is often described as a Skype alternative. The Viber PC client takes the convenience of the mobile app and brings it to your PC so you can stay connected even when you don’t have your mobile phone.
A key difference between Viber and Skype is that with Skype you can’t communicate with all of your mobile phone contacts that are also using the service. With Viber you can. Voice call, chat, send SMS, pictures and videos for free to any of your phone contacts who also have the app installed.
Key Features:
  • Group calling.
  • Sharing contacts.
  • Exchange information.
  • Send files.
  • High protection.
  • Use of stickers.
Viber has really impressive video calling capabilities. You can even call up to 100 of your contacts at the same time! A simple UI tops off the package nicely.
To use Viber on your Windows PC you will first need to install Viber on your mobile phone (Android, iPhone, Blackberry, Symbian and Windows Phone apps available).
Next install the Windows desktop client on your PC and sign in to synchronize your contacts across the two devices. Then you’re done, call and chat to your heart’s content at no cost.

Final Thoughts

How to Uninstall Programs on Windows 10

We’re living in an age where both minimalism and storage are everything. This is as true in the tech world as it is in the home décor industry.

Think about it. How many programs do you have on your PC that you never use? They will undoubtedly be taking up precious space. This is why many PC and laptop users choose to uninstall unwanted programs.
Essentially this is one of the most common tasks performed. Cleaning isn’t just reserved for spring, after all! But how do you do it?
In this How To Article we will explain how Windows 10 users can uninstall unneeded programs, without any hassle.
Windows 10, of course, still has the tried and trusted Programs and Features control panel menu that we enjoyed with Windows 7 and XP. However, it will not actually delete modern apps.
That being said, there is still a simple way to do so. We’re going to explain the process in just seven simple manual steps. Then we will share with you some Clean-Up Software to help make life a little easier. This type of software can help banish stubborn programs and the hidden files created by them.

But first, why should you uninstall programs on Windows 10?

As we said, if you have some unused or unwanted programs the best thing to do is uninstall them. Don’t worry, in most cases you can always reinstall them if circumstances change.
According to TechTalk, there are “various ways” in which this can help your computer or laptop. First of all, you will be getting more space available in your hard drive – which is always good news!
Uninstalling unwanted programs can also increase your computer speed as a result. This is because they will not be running in the background, so your device can get on with the tasks that matter.
It also enhances your security. Come on, we’ve all ignored updates from programs that we don’t often use. Don’t be foolish in thinking updates are only for getting new, shiny features.
Updates are important for addressing security vulnerabilities. So, if you’re not going to give time and attention to the app you really are better without it.

So, how do you uninstall programs on Windows 10?

  1. First of all you need to head to your Start menu (where all exciting things begin…).
  2. Once you’re there, select Settings.
  3. When you’re in Settings find the System option in the menu and click.
  4. Look on the left-hand side and choose Apps & Features.
  5. Now on the right you will see a list of all your installed apps and programs.
  6. Simply select the apps you want to get rid of…
  7. You will see an Uninstall option (We really don’t need to tell you what to do here, do we?)
Yes, it really is as simple as that. It’s worth noting though, if you get to step seven you and notice the Uninstall option isn’t available that means you definitely can’t remove it. It’s likely a system app and it would really be in your best interests to leave it well alone.

Is it worth considering Clean-Up Software?

You bet it is. Using a disk cleaner should be on your to-do list every now and then. It will help create more room on your computer, deleting unnecessary data that is slowing down your system.
Doing this while uninstalling programs may be perfect timing. We’re going to list three of our favourite options, after we explain why they’re vital for a happy computer.
Aside from creating more space, like uninstalling programs, you will be more secure after having a clear out. Whether you’re selling your laptop, or you just want peace of mind, clearing your hard drive of personal details and digits is advisable.
A disk clean-up will make sure your private information no longer exists on the computer. It will also remove hidden program files.
Moreover, if you’re having issues with removing programs through Windows 10, this method could also play a part. Now, our step-by-step method is pretty fool proof, but should it fail – a disk cleaner could come in handy.

Audacity 2020 review: Surprising power in free software

Typically, when you download free software, it tends to have limited functionality. Either it’s not very robust or it is missing key features that are only available with an upgrade. Audacity audio editing software is the exception to that rule. With a feature set that rivals larger, costlier programs, it is a powerful tool to mix, edit and convert a multitude of audio files.

Loading files

Getting files into Audacity is a straightforward affair. You can either open an existing file on your desktop, or you can use your computer’s microphone to record new audio content. You can also import files through a mixing board. Each file you load or open appears as a waveform across the screen. You then have the option of playing them together, merging them or editing them as you need.
Audacity can handle a wide range of audio files including: WAV, AIFF, Ogg Vorbis, FLAC, MP3 and MP2. An optional plug-in library opens the support to AC3, AMR(NB), M4A, MP4 and non-DRM-protected WMA files. Not only can the software import these files, but it can convert file types from one to the other as well.

Playing and Editing

Working with your sound file is also a breeze in Audacity. Simple play, pause, stop, record and forward and back buttons allow you to listen and create tracks just as if you were using an analog recorder. You can also drag a vertical line through the waveform to hear a particular section of your track with pinpoint precision. The cut tool allows you to remove sections of a track, the paste tool lets you insert the cut section or any other clip into your tracks, and simple merge functions let you combine two tracks into one, or add one track to the end of another. Effects and fade options along with an equalizer and distortion controls let you have even greater control over your mixes.
An auto “duck” feature allows you to set a function that drops the volume on a certain track as another is laid down. This is particularly useful for podcast recording. The software also allows you to easily reverse audio tracks or clips, trim off silence with a simple click, or even delay recording using a timer or setting a volume control that activates the record feature when a track reaches a certain level.
Audacity lets you stack unlimited tracks, so it’s possible to make very complex mixes. It’s worth noting, though, that the software will begin to get sluggish as more tracks are added.
Audacity
Another nice feature of Audacity is that it has unlimited undo and redo options, so even if you have been working on a file for hours and need to return to a version you had at the beginning, you are able to back up as much as you need.

Summary

Audacity handily provides all of the tools a home audio enthusiast, sample creator, or podcaster would need. While it can do impressive work on a wide range of audio files, it’s not as robust in creating new audio from scratch. For that, you’ll need a program like Garage Band or Adobe Audition. Still because the software is completely free, frequently updated to remove bugs and provide additional features, and super simple to use, it’s a great tool to add to your computer’s store of programs.
Audacity works across a wide range of platforms including Windows, Mac OS X (although at this time, it is not supported in Catalina) and Linux operating systems.

Sophos harnesses artificial intelligence to turbocharge its free antivirus software

Since its development in the late 1940’s, artificial intelligence (AI) has been used for everything from game playing to helping to improve healthcare. Broadly speaking, AI involves writing algorithms – a set of rules used in mathematics and computer programming languages – to enable a computer to observe a situation and make decisions that lead to a certain goal. AI has been used, for example, by beer maker Carlsberg to analyze the flavor and aroma profiles created by yeast and other ingredients to then predict how certain recipes will taste – without the company ever having to actually brew the beer.
While AI has taken a while to develop, thanks to more powerful computers and the availability of more digital data than ever before, it is now advancing at astounding speeds. And while it continues to be used in every field from finance to video games, it has been largely absent from the world of cybersecurity. That is now starting to change, with cybersecurity company Sophos helping to lead the way.
While many antivirus programs focus on databases of known malware, Sophos focuses on a specific type of AI called “deep learning” to help its software identify malware that’s never been seen before. Even more remarkably, the company has built this groundbreaking technology into both the free and premium versions of its software.

How it works

Deep learning takes place across computers equipped with neural networks. These networks are basically layers in decision trees used by the computer to process information and then update itself as new patterns emerge.
For example, a system might have one layer that decides that an image is present on a certain webpage. That page can then be passed to another layer that traces the outline of the image and decides what layer to forward it onto based on the basic shape. The layers get deeper and deeper, allowing the machine to hone its observations and provide remarkable accuracy.
Sophos feeds its neural network over 2.8 million malware samples each week for analysis, deconstruction, and comparison. Because neural networks thrive on enormous amounts of data, this provides the fuel for it to recognize not simply malware code – but malware behavior. This makes it one of the most robust antivirus software programs on the market today, enabling it to not only spot – and stop – widespread malware threats, but smaller anomalies that might just be starting to affect one or two computers on a network. Sophos embeds this technology in its antivirus programs, which is available in both free and paid versions of Sophos Home.
It’s rare to find such cutting-edge tech in even high-priced antivirus software systems. The fact that Sophos is making it available for free truly shows the company’s dedication to remaining one step ahead of cybercriminals, who are constantly developing more and more complex malware. For this reason, Sophos Home is one of our top recommendations for antivirus software in 2020.

About PUBLISHMEDIA®

Publish media are the world’s most trusted recommendation resources for quality entertainment. As the leading online aggregator of movie and TV show reviews from critics, we provide fans with a comprehensive guide to what’s Fresh – in theaters and at home. If you’re an entertainment fan looking for a recommendation, or to share an opinion, you’ve come to the right place.

What is the PUBLISHMEDIA®?

based on the opinions of hundreds of film and television critics – is a trusted measurement of critical recommendation for millions of fans.
Back in the days of the open theaters, when a play was particularly atrocious, the audience expressed their dissatisfaction by not only booing and hissing at the stage, but also throwing whatever was at hand – vegetables and fruits included.
The Publish media score represents the percentage of professional critic reviews that are positive for a given film or television show. A  jebucy media score is calculated for a movie or TV show after it receives at least five reviews.

What is Certified Fresh?
Certified Fresh status is a special distinction awarded to the best-reviewed movies and TV shows. In order to qualify, movies or TV shows must meet the following requirements:
  • A steady  Publish media score of 75% or higher.
  • At least five reviews from Top Critics.
  • Films in wide release must have a minimum of 80 reviews.
  • Films in limited release must have a minimum of 40 reviews.
  • Only individual seasons of a TV show are eligible, and each must have a minimum of 20 reviews.

A movie or TV show that reaches the requirements for Certified Fresh doesn't immediately receive the designation. Instead, it is automatically flagged for our staff's consideration. Once the team can determine that it's unlikely the score will drop below the minimum requirements, they will mark it Certified Fresh.
If the Jebucy media score drops below 70%, then the movie or TV show will lose its Certified Fresh status.

Curation

Publish media  has assembled a team of curators whose job it is to read thousands of movie and TV reviews weekly. The team collects movie and TV reviews from Jebucy media approved critics and publications every day, generating  Jebucy media scores. Our curators carefully read these reviews, noting if the reviews are Fresh or Rotten, and choose a representative pull-quote.  Jebucy media-approved critics can also self-submit their reviews.
